Welcome to my Winter Jewels, a most recent work that was created using muji ink pen from Japan as well as the exquisite Daniel Smith extra fine watercolours. The pigments in Daniel Smith paint are special and in that they have metals, like zinc in them, which pushes pigment to new heights. Typically, I will use a dry application method with the paints as this gives a textured appearance. I’ll use as little water as possible because it is much easier to add a bit of water than take away. I am pleased with the result.
With a tendency to work small, the original of this work was made on a gorgeous bright white card stock, 4 x 6 “. The image presented is a reproduction print made onto the same brand of card stock. The dimensions in the printed work are 5 x 5 inches. I work solely with Hemlock Printing Ltd in Burnaby, as they understand how and why I do what I do. The work is carefully photographed and then printed with a 4-colour ink process.
Their understanding of the importance of making my work come to life in the printing process is consistent. There are no surprises. I like to say that their ability to reproduce the work is verbatim to the original. I am in good hands with my Hemlock team and I never worry about the outcome. They make my work look so beautiful !
The photographer and I have a conversation ahead of time. We throw ideas back and forth. This conversation is only the beginning of what is about to unfold. It’s exciting and I continue to learn from Dave. One of the things that I learned from Dave is that once the Pressman takes over, they colour match the ink they will use to my original painting. Incredible !
Another part of the conversation with Dave focuses on what size and shape would work best. I like the appearance of a square. As well, the orientation of the card, as shown here, opens up like a wall calendar. The piece stands nicely on a table, the image, uninterrupted, as it were.
The white space around the work enhances and helps give meaning to what I am trying to say. Painting words with pictures and pictures with words is a phrase that I often use to describe what I do.
